No north opposition this time in C.J.C. first leg

The South Island's best could put up little more than token opposition against Fury's Order and company in the Benson and Hedges Inter-Island, but there should be consolation prizes for them in the Peninsula Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday.

At 2000 metres and. hopefully, on firmer footing this time, the claims of Rebel Lad, Warlight. and Magic Touch will be respected in the first leg of the Canterbury Jockev Club’s T.A.B. double.

Magic Touch, a weary (twelfth under 55kg in the Inter-Island, will meet Rebel Lad I.skg worse in the Peninsula Handicap — a surprising situation considering she finished three places behind the Riccarton horse [in Tuesday's feature race. Rebel Lad has often been [left with the role of a relucItant pacemaker, but if Warflight is true to type and goes ahead again an even !pace and a snug trailing (position should be open for the Riccarton six-year-old. I Warlight is a solid southI erner, and thrives on his! ! racing. This will be his third start in a week, but he will command respect on his wide and handsome victory at Wingatui last Saturday. Zebak and Scotch William, a successful and popular combination in the Suburban Handicap on Tuesday, might serve up repeat helpings in the Takamatua Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

They will be stepping up from 1400 to 1600 metres, but they have performed ably at the longer distance. If the footing is good this time they should find The Blues their most formidable rival. In December, The Blues won the James Hazlett [Stakes and a sprint at Washdyke in the style of a (top-flight horse in the making. His two unplaced runs in the meantime have been [on “off” tracks, and might best be disregarded if the footing is good. Sub Indian, fourth on Tuesday, and the Gore stableniates, Pakistan Flight and Gi-a-Rook are others certain to command the attention of the form students in what might be the best race on the card. There will be quinellas on all races on Saturday’s card; also a course concession double on the Oxford Highweight and Kaituna Handicap.
