‘Wheels for Wheels’ raises $18,000

The Combined Women’s Service Clubs’ project, “Wheels for Wheels,” raised double the target of S9OOO for a speciallyequipped motor vehicle to convey resident quadraplegics at St John of God Hospital.

This was caused by the tremendous response from secondary and primary school pupils, donations from citizens throughout the South Island, a number of age beneficiaries, anonymous donations and the support of business firms, said Miss R. Sterritt, the publicity officer for the project. It is hoped that the cab and chassis for the vehicle will be delivered to the ' motor body builder some time in March, when the iconstruction of the body-

I ; work and special equip-1 intent will commence. The project committee, i (consisting of representatives! iof Aitrusa International i jClubs of Christchurch and' ;New Bright, the Christ-1 i church South Soroptimist’s I Club, Student Radiographers! from Christchurch Hospital, j Zonta International Club of} Christchurch, and a group ofhousewives from Halswell. has expressed gratitude for help received. The committee’s own projects con-? tributed considerably to the raising of the money. Even allowing for the in-! creasing cost of the vehicle.! ibodywork, and special equip-? ment, there will be a healthy! amount in credit to establish' ia special vehicle fund to help with the maintenance' iof the vehicle.
