Five for national decathlon

A team of six — five men and one woman — was named yesterday to represent Canterbury In the New Zealand decathlon and pentathlon championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park on March IS and IS.

Among the men, the Commonwealth Games representative, Mene Mene, will be attempting to win the decathlon for the fourth successive time. He will also be hoping to better the 7000-point total for the first time.

The other decathlon athletes are Mike Ritchie, Kevin Hickman, Roger Knaggs and the junior, Keiran McKee.

The only Canterbury representative in the pentathlon is Susan Bumside, who provided a major surprise last season by winning the national title while she was still attending school.

Allan Callow, the former Isle of Man Commonwealth Games road walking representative, has withdrawn from the Canterbury team for the track and field championships at Dunedin tomorrow and Saturday.

Callow, who has given no reason to the selectors, was to have competed in the 20-mile road walk and the 5000-metres track walk. Graham Seatter, the New Zealand junior champion, will now be Canterbury’s only representative in both races.

There have been two withdrawals from the team for the marathon, Coleman Creagh (Greymouth) and M. Mackley.
