M.P.s may call for $l05 rise
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, February 26. Members of the Federal Parliament are reported to be pushing for a salary rise of at least $lO5 a week. Sources in Canberra say that members of all parties have entered negotiations for the rise — which was rejected last year after being denounced by the Prime Minister (Mr Gough Whitlam). Mr Whitlam says that the call for higher salaries for politicians makes a mockery out of his appeals to the unions to restrain their wage demands. The tribunal which reviews Parliamentarians’ salaries and those of grade one public servants is due to begin new discussions soon. The Parliamentarians want i their salaries increased to i $385 a week — plus expenses.
