Riders asked to explain tactics
Riders of the horses which finished behind the winner Beau Trie in a five-horse field for the Redwood Handicap at Riccarton yesterday were taken before the Canterbury Jockey Club's judicial committee and asked to explain their riding tactics during the early stages of the race. I The jockeys were told it had ! been noticeable that they had | held their mounts under strong I restraint while Beau Trie was I allowed to take a long lead of approximately 12 lengths. The riders concerned were J. R. Dowling (Gi-a-Rook). P. B. Thistoll (Kai Tak). L. J. Molloy (Audaciter), and M. J. Skelton (Three Sevens). The judicial committee advised these riders that although it was not going to prefer any actions against them it expressed disappointment in the actions of their riding when they failed to show any initiative In the early stages of the race.
Mr P. J. Reid, the chief stipendiary steward, also spoke to the riders concerned in the race and warned them of their obligations concerning their riding. Mr Reid advised them that should the provisions of Rule 275 be applied, which states that riders must take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse is given full opportunity to win the race, thev could expect a lieavy fine or suspension.
