DEFAULT CLAIM REJECTED
An attempt by the Sydenham captain, Keith Thomson, to claim a default win against East-Shirley in the senior cricket match last Saturday was quickly dismissed by the Canterbury Cricket Association’s management committee last evening. Thomson claimed the match because only two East-
Shirley players were present at Sydenham Park five minutes before the match was due to start. The convener of the competitions committee (Mr C. L. Bull) said that he had received a result card from Thomson and recommended that no points be awarded to Sydenham for the default claim. Mr Bull said that it was raining at the stipulated time of the start of play and that one of the East players present was the captain, Carl Dickel. He added that the two captains agreed to confer later. Mr Bull said that a default was possible only if a side pulled out or if the umpires took their places and called for play to start. COMMON SENSE “There was obviously no chance of the umpires going out,” he said. “The rules in this case should be interpreted by common sense and this claim is not one of common sense.” The umpires’ delegate (Mr F. Fielding), who was officiating in the match, said that he did not consider Thomson’s claim to be serious. “But we should clarify the position in the local rules,” he said. This view was supported by the chairman (Mr I. P. Anderson).
