Little River ewes sell well

Young Romney ewes'; met an excellent sale at ! the Little River fair yesterday. The entry was a small one;' at 4937 head, but it was of uniformly high quality, and; demand was strong. The j combination of a short entry; and strong buying power pro-1 duced a good sale, which! gained in strength as it went; along. It started well but; values advanced by a dollar or two as it progressed, and] with almost the whole entry, selling at $ll or better once, again the average style of [ sheep looked to be relatively; dearer than the better class. | An indication of the rela-l tive strength of the fair can be gained from the fact that; 10 pens sold yesterday > showed a droo on the prices;: for 13 pens of the same ven- ' dor’s sheep sold a year ago' of a fraction less than 20 per; cent. This was a better per-; formance than most fairs j have been able to put up this season, although they have; generally been relatively good. Out of the 77 pens offered yesterdav 17 realised $l5 or; more, and only 13 failed to; reach $llThe top money paid during; the day was $16.70 for 53; from D. O. Masefield (Goughs Bay)- „ ~ . ~ The sheep of him and his brother, R. T. Masefield, are alwavs a feature of the fair. r T Masefield also had sales :

I at $16.20 and $l6 for 52 and 158, and D. O. Masefield sold | another 55 at $15.90. [ J. R. Stanbury (Springvale) also topped the $l6 mark [with 89 at $16.10 and G. L. Cooper (Kaituna) sold 75 at $l6. i While the best of the good ; selection sold from about $l5 [to $16.70, good made from [ about $l4 to $l5, average isll to $l3, and light and | small down to $7, but there ■were few in the latter category. BEST AVERAGE I D. O. Masefield also had [the best average for the day [with two pens containing 108 [sheep averaging $16.29, but [for these top sheep it was a long way behind his average [last year of better than $24.90, when he topped the .market at $25.80. His [brother’s average for 110 yesterday was $16.09 compared [with more than $24.80 a year; [ago, when he was paid up to! $25.70. I G. L. Cooper, with 301 [ selling from $l5 to $l6, had; the good average of $15.41.1 [For 825 selling from $13.90[ to $16.10 Mr Stanbury aver-i aged $14.89, but last year hisi ;average for 934 sheep was! [more than $23. The latter! [vendor’s entry was again the; largest in the sale and was; a very attractive selection,; grossing more than $12,000. ; O. G. Jenkins (Port Levy)! with two pens bringing from i 512.40 to $15.20, averaged. $13.82 for 154. i

For their 807 selling from $10.60 to $l5 the Annandale estate (Pigeon Bay) averaged $12.69 compared with more than $l7 lasty ear. E. S. Craw (Chorlton) realised from $10.90 to $l5 for 259, which averaged $12.50, and Knockindale estate (Pigeon ; Bay) averaged $12.47 for 304 , selling from $11.40 to $13.60 [ compared with an average of i $15.60 at the last fair. Apart from the Romneys there was also a small selection of Border Romneys which made from $13.50 to $l4, with Kinloch Farm I (Little River) selling 72 at $l4 and 76 at $13.60, and ; there were also some Perendales which realised from [ $13.40 to $l4 with N. A. [ Fraser (Takamatua) receiving $l4 for 36 and A. O. Lowe (Ackland Downs) $13.80 for 89. While most' of the sheep were purchased by peninsula buyers, one firm made purchases for a client outside i the province. ; Details of sales were (the ; sheep being Romneys unless I; otherwise stated): — Wrightson NMA, Ltd, sold on i; account of:— I B.
