Liquor banned from park

Liquor will be banned from Lancaster Park during the second cricket test between New Zeaand and England, which will start on Friday — and the police will help enforce the ban.

The decision to disallow] liquor was criticised by Mr L. J. Knowles at the Canterbury Cricket Association s ; management committee meeting last evening. When, as happened in<i Auckland, a busload of policemen and five cars of, police arrived at the ground, ;i and a policeman used binocu- i lars to spot anyone drinking j, in the crowd, cricket was in I a sad state, he said. : The chairman (Mr I. P.: Anderson) said that the situa-l: tion was different in Auck-p land, where the police could:I over-rule the Eden Park: Trust. “The law is clear, and can! be enforced by the Victory! Park staff,” he said. “It was) not made for the 98 per cent j of spectators, but for the .21 per cent who would spoil it; for others.” __|

I Mr A. G. Williams, a memI ber of the Victory Park Board, said that a bar with i television was provided ai 'the ground. i “We have been concerned i about the standard of a certain section of the crowd.” .Mr Williams said. “If this ; continues, we are excluding genuine patrons who are not (prepared to return to watch (test matches. We have had this behaviour from the No. 15 stand. It is our endeavour to stop the abuse that hag [taken place from recurring,” he said.
