ROYAL TOUR
Mexicans in gay mood
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright)
MEXICO CITY, Feb. 25. Hundreds of thousands of cheering Mexicans gave the Queen one of the warmest welcomes yet accorded a State visitor yesterday as she drove through sunny Mexico City streets in an open minibus to begin a six-day tour of the country. Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and President and Mrs Echeverria, the first British monarch to - visit Mexico was showered with a storm of confetti, ticker tape and flower petals from the tightly-packed crowd. Shouts of “Bienvenida!” (“Welcome!”) and “Viva Isabel!” (“Long live Elizabeth!”) rent the air.
Several hundred steelhelmeted riot policemen carrying tear-gas grenades and machine-guns lined the streets near the British Embassy, and others could be seen on rooftops, but the welcome to the Queen was not marred by unpleasantness.
