' Arabs seek interest in U.K. bank '
(K.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 25. Arab oil sheikhs may be secretly negotiating to buy a large part of the SlaterWalker merchant-banking organisation, the "Guardian” reports. It says that Mr Jim Slater, the head of the organisation, is having discussions with the giant Lonhro trading group, which is reported to he acting as middleman in the negotiations.
| The Arabs are interested in securing a substantial interest in a British investment ibank, to be used as conduit for investments in the West, 'the newspaper says. Mr Slater would not con'firm that the negotiations were taking place, but his banking group’s shares soared from 11 pence to 85 pence on the stock market yesterday. Lonhro, now owned tn part by Kuwaiti investors, also declined to comment on the report, but a spokesman said that the company is plaving a key role in planning Arab investment.
