Centenarian sister dead
Al CKI.AND Sister Mary Hyacinth O’Connor, the longest-serving member >f the Sisters of .Mercy Order in New Zealand, died in the Mater Hospital. Auckland, on Monday, m her 100th year. Sister Maty was born and educated m the Otago township o{ Milton, but spent he, 75 years with the Order in the Auckland diocese. She began her career at St Mary's Convent, Ponsonby, but in the following, years served in many roles. "In fact, she spent most of het 'life helping people.’’ Sistei Benedict, the Mother-General of the Order in New Zealand said today. “She could do practically anything, from teaching io nursing and lookling after children.’’ Until prevented by illhealth late in her life. Sister Mary had served in religious houses throughout the Auckland diocese, which extends to North Cape. Among the institutions in which she was active was the Mater Hospital, where she spent several years nursing, and where she died this morning.
