Unemployment in Japan

The Director of the Prime Minister’s Office (Mr Mitsunori Ueki) has predicted that the number of unemployed in Japan would total 1.27 million in March, or between 2.4 and 2.5 per cent of the total work force. Mr Ueki, who made hiS; prediction at a Cabinet meeting, said that the number of unemployed in January was likely to be 1.06 million, and in February, 1.16 million. By April, he thought, there would be a decline to 1.08 million. The Statistics Office had earlier reported that the number of unemployed in December totalled 830,000, or 1.6 per cent of the total labour force of 52,740,000.
