Extension of airlift (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PHNOM PENH, Feb. 24. The 10-day supplementary American airlift by DCB aircraft into Phnom Penh, due to expire today, has been extended for two more days during which 540 tons of ammunition and equipment will be flown in, a United States Embassy official said. He said that the extension, which would provide the capital with 12 additional flights, was necessary because six Hercules transports due to go into service with the normal daily airlift were not ready. American Hercules aircraft, operating from Bangkok, have been supplying Phnom Penh with about 12 to 14 flights a day. Informed sources said that the airlift reached a peak last Friday when six DCB and 16 Hercules flights landed in the capital. The sources added that the Hercules flights might be increased to 25 or 30 a day soon.
The source also said that the Hercules planes might soon start ferrying in food in addition to military supplies. Phnom Penh’s two million residents need a minimum of 550 tons of rice a day, and stocks are rapidly diminishing.
