Under-age athletic titles

Only three Canter-■ bury records were bet-1 tered in the provincial under-age track and I field championships, held' in the rain at Queen; Elizabeth II Park on Saturday and yesterday, in spite of a high stand-\ ard in all grades. And, because superior performances are awaiting recognition in each case, it is probable that none of them will prove acceptable to the Canterbury Athletic Centre executive. However, this could not detract trom the quality of the three performances, achieved in very unfavourable conditions. Maureen O’Reilly (New Brighton! clipped half a second off her record of 2min 20.7 sec in the under 15 girls’ Buo metres final yesterday. This was more than a second faster than the winning time in the under 17 final. only Ruth Dippie (Temukai has run faster. Her time of 2min 2osec set last December is still awaiting ratification. The runner-up, Wendy Mollison < Avon), was also inside the record with her time of 2min 2U.4sec. Miss O’Reilly, who won the under 15 400 metres title as well, was chosen as the Farmers ■■.i.hleie of the Day’’ yesterday. The award for Saturday went deservedly to Jason Lovell (Christ’s College), who provided one of the upsets of the championships by defeating the Canterbury senior title-holder. Terry Lomax (High School Ola Bovs>, in the boys’ under 17 high jump. Lovell narrowly failed to clear 1.98 metres, but his best leap of 1.88 metres was good enough to give him victory on a count-back from Lomax,

who cleared the same height. Both performances bettered the Canterbury record of 1.85 metres, held by Keiran McKee! i Toe H). but a jump of 1.90; metres bv Lomax is awaiting ratification. 400 MITHS FINAL The other record performance • was by Richard Goldstone (Avon) I in the boys’ under 17 400 metres! final. He won the race in the! outstanding time of 49.685ec from David Wilson i Ash burton*. A time of 48.8 sec by Goldstone earlier in the season has not yet been considered by the Canterbun* executive for record purposes. Wilson, who has emerged as one of Canterbun’s most promising young sprinters in recent weeks, won the under 17 200 metres title on Saturday. A! minor leg Injun forced him to* withdraw from the 100 metres* yesterday, and this was won by I another very promising Ashburton sprinter. Peter Hunt, the son of Mr B. S. Hunt, the convener of the New Zealand athletic: selection panel. Ross Gibson (Tee Hi, whoi finished second to Hunt, demon- 1 st rated his versatility by taking: second place in the under 1* shot. This was won by the big! Geraldine athlete, Noel Lewis.; with a throw of 13.29 metres. 1 Lewis also won the discus i i35J6 metres), and was third behind Albie Meager <Ashburton > and Peter Dyer (Cashmere); in the javelin. Michael Molloy (Avon) gained an impressive 1500-800 metres double in the under 17 boys’ grade, and Martin O’Connor VniversHy-Shirlev) showed unusual stamina for his age bx winning the 3000 metres flat, the 1300 metres steeplechase, and taking second place to Molloy in the 1500 metres flat. GIRLS' EVENTS In the girls’ sprint events, Kathleen Burt (Technical) indicated that she would be making her mark in npen competition’ before long bv winning the: under 15 100 metres in 12.62.cec* and the 200 metres in 25.735ec. Both these times were faster than Josephine Steele (Avon) I achieved in winning the samej two events in the higher grade. Miss Burt also won the under 15 girls’ long-jump title with a leap of 5.22 metres. Probable the outstanding performer in the girls’ fi eld events was Vicki Phillips <New Brighton* She won the shot and the d*scus. and was mnner-up in the javelin in the under 15 g*ade. In the under 17 grade rook the discus title and finished third in the javelin. Jan Bishop (Technical), who* finished behind he” in the under 17 discus, won both the shot and the lavelln. In the under 17 boys’ grade. John Rawcliffe 'Ashburton* set > Canterbury record of 8.51 metres Abbreviations used in the fol-
