Historic buildings

Sir, — My grave apprehensions regarding the fate of Trinity Pacific Church have been confirmed by the absurd comments of Mr B. R. Cameron and Mr R. B. Keey in “The Press” today. At a time when the people of Christchurch (and of New Zealand) are deeply and genuinely concerned about the quality of their lives and the preservation of their heritage amid soaring inflation, two spokesmen for their respective organisations dare to admit publicly that they know nothing of either the aesthetics or the economics involved in preserving this historic old church. Mr Keey says “normal economic criteria do not apply.” Mr Cameron says alteration

plans are going ahead without knowing who is going to use the building or what their requirements will be. May Christchurch citizens — especially those interested in preserving the Normal School, the Theatre Royal, and the Post Office — look on Trinity Pacific Church and beware. — Yours etc., M. P. OWEN.
