Selwood takes S.I. Moth contest
The New Zealand International Moth yachting champion, Melv Seiwood (Waimakariri Sailing Club), added his fourth South Island title to his list of successes at Timaru.
However, Seiwood wa; strongly challenged through out the three-race series an, had no easy task in return ing an unbeaten record. In the opening heat, hel< in a good breeze, Selwooc managed to complete th< course ahead of the defend ing champion, Tony Blan chard, Fendall Halliburton and Andy Holland. The other races were sail ed in much lighter condr tions and several changes were noticeable among the leaders. Seiwood still tool the gun, but onh after a vast wind-shift mor< than nullified the decisiv< lead held by the noted J. C
is skipper, Edward Snowden, h- on the last leg of the third id heat. n- Snowden had been Imin 30sec in front at the bottom Id mark, only to be left well to )d leeward when the wind came leih from the north-west. He d-was beaten to the line by i- Seiwood and Holland and in only just managed to hold off* the fast-finishing Blan-l-chard by inches. i- The 'youthful Snowden iswas competing in a skiff lealmost 10 years old, but he >kput the latest Australian-rig-lyged scows to shame in the re lighter airs. He was the winze ner of the handicap section C.of the contest.
