POWER IN CYPRUS.—-Archbishop Makarios was temporarilydeposed as President of Cyprus last year after a coup organised by Greek officers of the Cyprus National Guard. In the photograph above he waves from outside No. 10 Downing Street while the British Prime Minister, Mr Harold Wilson, looks on. “Makarios: Pragmatism v. Idealism,” by a Greek Cypriot, Dr F. N. Vanezis, was written before the coup, but it throws valuable light on events in Cyprus. Dr Vanezis is an admirer of Archbishop Makarios, and is committed to the Greek Cypriot case. His book, the second of a trilogy, does not deal at all sympathetically with the Turkish Cypriots. It does provide a different interpretation of Archbishop Makarios from that given by international news agencies, which tend 5 to treat him as a scheming priest.
