STAKES EVENT LOOKS FOUR-HORSE CONTEST
Unless some of the unraced youngsters in the Timaru Nursery Stakes today have undisclosed talents the fortieth running of the Timaru Trotting Club’s feature race for two* year-olds should be a four-horse affair.
Luck of the running in what is almost certain to be; a capacity field is bound to; have a bearing on the result) but if all goes well for! Fancy Fred, Main Adios, Ho Ho King and Tarport Toby they should all be involved in the finish. By a strange coincidence each of the four drew the ) second line so, with the exception of Ho Ho King which, because of scratchings, now starts from the front line, they will need plenty of luck. The last time Main Adios, Tarport Toby and Fancy Fred met — in the Forbury Juvenile Stakes on January 27 — they finished one, two and three in that order with half a length and a nose between them.
That victory gave Main Adios a winning record of •four for the season. That makes him two-up on Fancy • Fred which has had to settle i for minor placings since his I second win — a runaway affair at Addington Raceway ;on New Year's Night. Tarport Toby and Ho Ho ) King will both be trying for a second success today. The !former’s first win came at Addington Raceway on JanuI ary 22 and Ho Ho King I gained his first success on ! the same course three nights . later.
Late yesterday the field of 114 in the Clarenden Hotel • Handicap, the first leg of • the T.A.B. double, remained intact with La Roue still at the top of the list of popular fancies.
The prospect of another winning run by Carmel — she was successful at Addington Raceway only last week — was strengthened yesterday when the Darfield stablemates, Graduand and Loch End, dropped out of the field for the Washdyke Handicap, second leg of the double.
