ATHLETICS NURSERY
More than 500 children between the ages of seven and 13 years are competing in organised track and field competition in Christchurch this season. This is partly a reflection of the interest generated in the sport by the Commonwealth and New Zealand Games and partly the result of the untiring work by the Canterburv children’s committee. This season promises to be the best yet for children’s athletics in Christchurch. Recently, the New Brighton club represented Canterbury against Marlborough at Blenheim. Previously. a Canterbury representative team has been chosen for this meeting and has always won comfortably. It was decided to send
the club winning the cup for the most points in inter-club competition last season instead. New Brighton officials were pleased with the performances of their 56 athletes; they illustrated the depth of talent in the province. The children s championships will be held at Queen Elizabeth II Park on March 1 and 2. On March 15, the first children's match between Canterbury and Otago will take place at Mqsgiel.
