Potters form new studio

A group of Christchurch professional potters have formed a co-operative known as Studio 393 to exhibit their works. The six potters—Margaret Higgs. Denise Welsford, Rex Valentine, Michael Trumic, Lawrence Ewing, and Fredrika Ernsten — have established themselves as a close-knit group who work together on occasions, and share their ideas and display facilities. Studio 393, situated at 393 Montreal Street, (not to be confused with the Artists’ Quarter at the south end of Montreal Street), is open to the public every Friday until 9 p.m. The public may purchase not only the work of Studio 393 potters but also that of guest potters who will be invited to exhibit. The idea, according to one of the group, is to present a wide variety of pots under one roof, and also to foster the work of new potters. The group cannot underprice the

shops in their exhibitions, but the advantage to the public will be the priority given to Studio 393 when selecting works for sale. Another advantage is the fact

that some of the items considered by shops to be poor sellers but highly valued by potters and collectors will be more readily available. During the Arts Festival,

Studio 393 will hold a special pottery exhibition of works by 15 potters. The . well-known Christchurch artist, Philip Trusttum, has also been invited to exhibit.
