SILVERFISH FOR TEA

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, Feb. 21.

Chinese silverfish may sound unappetising, but don’t turn your nose up. The “silverfish” are Chinese whitebait, on sale for about $3 a pound in Hamilton shops this week.

The whitebait have been imported from Australia, which in turn imports them from China, by Jay-bel-Nichimo, in Auckland. A company spokesman said today that the firm turned to the Chinese fish when New Zealand’s season last year proved disappointing. Jaybel-Nichimo received

its first shipment just before Christmas and the whitebait was selling very well, the spokesman said. The price was probably as low as it was because whitebait was not considered a delicacy in China. The firm would continue its imports throughout New Zealand’s off-season.

A Hamilton fish retailer, Mr S. M. Borich, said the Chinese whitebait was very good quality. “They’re whiter than the New Zealand variety and they have no smell. New Zealand whitebait can have a weedy smell,” he said.
