The Statistics Department was to increase the strength of its staff throughout New Zealand from 590 to more than 700 over the next three or four years, said the Minister in charge of the department (Mr Connelly) in Christchurch yesterday.'
; For the Christchurch | branch of the department the increase will be from the present 145 to more than 200— I which will make it the largest in the country outside Wellington. The main emphasis and | direction of the staff increase lin the department’s Christchurch office will be on research and computer projgramming. Mr Connelly i added that during the next census a further 200 temporary staff would be taken on in Christchurch early in 1976. He said recently that the Government had approved the provision of new computers for the department, the date for the installation of them was August or September.
