Cost of the monarchy
Sir, — The comparison of; costs for a Head of State ■ neglected a factor which; • makes a monarchy a better' I bargain financially than a irepublic. As well as salary; 1 for their Head of State, most! republicans must also pay; for elections every few| years to get him. A monarchy reigning for 50 years would cover perhaps 10 five-yearly elections, a saving which should have appealed to Willie Hamilton, We New Zealanders scarcely realise how little our Head of State costs us, compared with other countries. We pay our Governor-General a very modest salary, and it costs us nothing to get a new Head, unless, perhaps, we sent a paua shell christening mug when Prince Charles was born. Economy-minded citizens should also note that taxpayers in the European monarchies (and Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) have much less to pay for the controlling of and damage from revolts and riots than most republicans. — Yours, etc., MONARCHIST. February 20, 1975. i
