Rate increases

Sir,—So the Citizens’ council is using the previous Labour council as its scapegoat for the high increases in rates this year.. Could it be a few sour grapes in not thinking of having land sales to “cushion rates” first? Also did not Mr Hay and the Citv Treasurer know more about the rates situation than was publicly known? I am also getting heartily sick of hearing about Queen Elizabeth II Park having such big losses. No-one ever mentions the losses of the Town Hall. The park cannot be expected to show a profit in the short time it has been in operation. Actually the Town Hall should not show a loss at all after all this time. Maybe Mr Hay could tell me where he got the money for the new Mayoral car as the council has none? I think that Crs Garrett and Skellerup would be more at ease in one of the playgrounds the council is so intent on building than in the council chamber. — Yours, etc., FED-UP. February 19, 1975. Sir,—Your correspondent, Heather Lowrie, says “as a housewife must budget so must the council.” Surely it is because of the excessive extravagance of the last Mayor and his council that this present council has to budget now. Her petty statement that the Mayor’s income is four times greater than that of the average working man is hardly relevant when you consider the one who got us into this mess is drawing a salary many times in excess of the average worker.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYING PENSIONER. February 20, 1975.
