D. Reed out until end of season

The Riccarton jockey David Reed was busy yesterday morning filling a good list of mounts for the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting next Tuesday little knowing he would not be riding at the meeting —- or at any other race meeting, for that matter, until next season.

Reed had not been advised by then of a decision made by the executive of the New Zealand Racing Conference last Friday to withdraw his jockey’s licence for the rest of the season. Last Friday’s executive meeting also cancelled the training licence of Graeme Walters and an announcement of this decision was made that same evening. Mr A. M. Hughes, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, said from Auckland yesterday that the executive had had a heavy agenda to get through last Friday. That, he said, could account for the delay in sending a letter from the conference to Reed advising the jockey of the conference decision. Mr Hughes said the con-j ference’s letter had been mailed on Tuesday. He added that the lack of any greater urgency could perhaps be excused by the fact that Reed was then under suspension up to and including February 22 after being found guilty of careless riding in the Gordon’s Gin Handicap at Riccarton on February 6 Mr Hughes said yesterday that the conference had not felt it necessarv to have Reed in Auckland because of

.past events in the jockey's '“case history.” > In May of last year Reed (appeared before the executive of the conference and was called on to explain why his licence should not be withdrawn in the light o.‘ his list of suspensions and inci- ! dents involving fines. I In August Reed was suspended for one day because i of careless riding, and after I his latest suspension at Riccarton earlier in the month the conference executive ' decided to act on its earlier ' warning last year.
