Port rethink requested

TIMARU, Feb. 20.

The Timaru Harbour Board this morning asked the Government to defer a decision on the siting of the South Island container port for several years.

A deputation from the board met with the Minister of Transport (Sir Basil Arthur) for almost two hours and asked him to defer anv decision until a full study had been made on the impact a container port would have on regional development.

The board’s chairman (Mr B. J. Petrie) said the board had also asked that if a container port should go ahead i in the near future, consideration should be given to protecting secondary ports such as Timaru.

Minister off.—The Minister of Transport (Sir Basil Arthur) will visit Australia next week for the twice-yearly meeting of the Australian Transport Advisory* Council.
