'LAST POWER RISE’

fA’.Z. Press Association) I NELSON, Feb. 20. A 5 per cent rise on April 1 in electricity tariff will be the last increase this year, says the Minister of Electricity (Mr Bailey). The 5 per cent increase is the maximum allowed by the Government, but many power authorities will still be financially pressed. Spokesmen view the increase as insufficient and only a stop-gap measure. Mr Bailey denied that it was such a measure, and said no more tariff increases I would occur this year. I

| Should some authorities find themselves in financial difficulties, he said, there was a special committee to which they could appeal for an increase in excess of the 5 per cent. But an authority must justify its case and show genuine hardship. If the committee agreed that an authority had sufficient need, it would recommend the increase to the Minister of Finance who would most likely approve it. Mr Bailey said he hoped, though, that power boards would be able to cope with •the 5 per cent increase.
