NEW COMBAT AIRCRAFT
British Govt denial (N.Z.P. A. Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 20.
Britain would proceed with the proposed all-purpose European combat aircraft, rather than change to a “buyAmerican” programme, the Secretary of State for Defence (Mr Roy Mason) said yesterday.
He was commenting on European press reports that Britain was thinking of reducing her commitment to the British-West German-Italian project, preferring America’s Multi-Role Combat Aircraft.
“These reports have in- ■ eluded suggestions that we and our partners have made an arrangement with the Americans under which they would look to Europe to supply their tank requirements in return for our depending on them for fighter aircraft and abandoning the M.R.C.A. in the process,” Mr Mason said.
“I cannot imagine how this rumour started — there is absolutely no substance in it.”
