Bangladesh may outlaw marriages
(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright) DACCA, Feb. 17. Marriages may be outlawed in Bangladesh next year, and again in 1978, to de-fuse the country’s population explosion, if family-planning experts in Dacca have their way. One of them, Mr Nurul Islam Khan, declares in a report: “Marriage may be completely banned in alternate years, with provision for exceptional cases. “The right to marriage is not part of an individual’s birthright. It is an idiotic idea that everybody, irrespective of flnancial, physical and mental capability, should be entitled to marriage.’’ Experts told a recent conference that family planning was a basic human right and should be protected by law. They suggested comprehensive legislation which would cover abortion, polygamy and marriage, and said that the alreadyovercrowded country’s population should be reduced.
The experts also urge raising the age at which marriages should take place, courses on population control in schools, and the encouragement of later marriages.
