Cagney loses in court
(.v.Z. Press Assn —CopartsM) NEW YORK. Tames Cagney has lost his court fight to prevent publication of an unauthorised biography of him by a British Broadcasting Corporation reporter. Michael Freedland The retired film actor had alleged that Mr Freedland. through deception, obtained an interview with him when he was covering the American Film Institute’s annual life-achievement awards for 1974. Mr Cagney was honoured by the institute. Mr Cagney alleged that Mr Freedland then used the, material gathered in the! interview in writing the! unauthorised biography. The Manhattan State Supreme Court judge. Justice] Sidney Fine, in denying Mr! Cagney’s bid for an injunction against Stein and bay, publishers of the! Freedland book, said: “Since Mr Cagney is a public figure, he cannot argue successfully that there was an, invasion of his privacy, the! basis for the injunction.”
