‘Scoopedout' bat

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON. A new design of cricket bat tested by the Australian captain, lan Chappell, is to be put into production by the British firm of Gray-Nicholls, Ltd, of Robertsbridge, Sussex. It has a “scooped-out” back which the company claims has the effect of distributing the weight of the blade over a wider area.

The company also claims that the new design will enable balls to be hit straighter and further. “In the hands of some of the world’s top players, this new bat can be deadly,” said John Gray, the group marketing director, “and there is little doubt too that dub-level batting will be enormously improved too.”

The bat has been in development for over a year, and has been tested privately by such players as the Chappell brothers, Mike Denness, Keith Fletcher, Barry Richards, Frank Hayes, and Gordon Greenidge.
