“The Press” trophy
A hand-carved model of a Maori rangatira has been chosen as the trophy to be presented to “The Press” track and field “Athlete of the New Zealand Games” during a short closing ceremony at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Sunday. Valued at $lOO, the maximum amount permitted for any athletics trophy under the rules of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, the wooden figure was carved in totara by Mr J. A. McCready, of Wellington. The title of rangatira belongs to Maori tribal chieftains or members of the tribal aristocracy, the rank
being acquired by birth or because of qualities of leadership. The model of the rangatira wears a kahu-huru-huru, or cloak of kiwi feathers, over a flaxen skirt, and holds a patu, a sharp-edged whalebone war club. The “Athlete of the Games” award, the first to be made at a major international athletics festival, is being sponsored by “The Press.” The winner will be chosen by a panel of three, headed by the convener of selectors for the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr B. S. Hunt).
