CARS-BY AIR
A Bristol freighter has been hired to transport four midget racing cars to Christchurch this afternoon so that their drivers will have them in plenty of time for the international meeting at Templeton Speedway tonight. A. J. Foyt, the great American motor-racing driver, a fellow-country-man, Mel Kenyon, wd two leading Australians, John Fenton and Barry Pinchbeck, were scheduled to make their first appearances in New Zealand at Western Springs. Auckland, on Saturday. Rain forced the meeting to be postponed until last evening and upset plans to transport their cars to Christchurch by road.
Initially, it was thought that one of the cars would have to be left behind because the hold of a Bristol freighter is only 32ft long. The four midget cars, end to end, total 45ft. It was proposed to overcome this problem by partially dismantling the cars. It is hoped to have them reassembled and in racing order in time to allow the four interne.tional drivers to practise at Templeton late this afternoon. Foyt is the most famous driver produced by the United States. He has won the Indianapolis 500 race three times and the French Le Mans 24- hour race once. He has not previously visited New Zealand.
