Govt buys Chathams station

WELLINGTON.

Negotiations had been; completed for the Government purchase of the 4425hectare Wharekauri station on the Chatham Islands, said the Minister of Lands (Mr Rata), “This purchase, along with the recent one of the Awatea block, will enable the Government to provide a much needed boost for the Chatham Islands fanning economy,” he said. “With a strong fanning base, the economy of the Chathams will support the meat works,” said Mr Rata. Wharekauri station, about 27 kilometres from Waitangi, was now run as a beef and sheep grazing unit. Much of the land had a cover of fern and scrub which provided only limited grazing. “The Department of Lands and Survey will develop the area and the techniques used in this development will certainly influence farming in general in the Chathanw,” said Mr Rata,
