“I Care” awards
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Jan. 13
An area in Glendowie that the Auckland City Council planned to turn into a rubbish dump is now a flourishing wildlife reserve—and will share an award given by the former Prime Minister, Sir Keith Holyoake. The Tamaki Estuary Protection Society, which led the drive to preserve the area on Tamaki Drive, has won $l5OO for “its demonstrated concern for the mouth” of the river. It plans to spend the prize-money on the reserve. The society and Mr Douglas Sinclair, of Raumati South, will share the N.Z.B.C.’s “I Care” $3OO environmental award. Mr Sinclair’s award was made for his contribution to public education and his encouragement of environmental awareness in 1974.
