Honour for Mrs Young
New Zealand’s most successful field athlete, Valerie Young, of Canterbury, has been chosen to recite the oath of amateurism at the New Zealand Games.
Mrs Young, who in her two events—the shot put and the discus —has attended three Olympic and four Commonwealth Games, at which she has won five gold medals, will take the oath on behalf of all competing athletes at the opening ceremony at Queen Elizabeth II Park on the evening of January 22.
