(N.2. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Jan. 13. The Southdewn freezing works is expected to resume normal work tomorrow after being partly closed today over complaints that rats were infesting the chamber hands’ lunchroom. A spokesman for the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co-operative, Ltd, said tonight that special steps were being taken to deal with the rat problem. This morning 130 chamber hands walked out when they found three rats caught in traps in their lunchroom where others have been found in recent days.
By the end of the day most of the 1300 work force was idle.
The president of the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union (Mr F. E. Barnard) said the men were concerned about a possible disease risk.
