Preservation of trees
Sir, — All people conscious of the need to preserve the city’s trees will have been pleased to have read on January 9 that the Waimairi County Council appears to be trying to do something effective about this problem. Apparently if the council can get amend* ing legislation to the Town and Country Planning Act it will be able and prepared to pass a by-law to prohibit anyone from cutting down trees or shrubs (above a certain size) on private property without the council’s prior permission. When the council comes to pass such a by-law it should impose a very tough penalty on lawbreakers as the removal of a trpe to a developer could be worth several thousand dollars. This would be the only way to show those irresponsible persons who needlessly cut down, for example, 100-year-old walnut trees, that they are considered by most people to be vandals. — Yours, etc., TREE LOVER.
