Reduction of tapu
(N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI.
A tapu area imposed after the death of a boy who jumped off the bridge at Waitangi last Saturday, has been reduced to avoid inconvenience to the thousands of holidaymakers in the Bay of Islands.
The boy struck a passing boat when he dived from the bridge. His body was not found until Tuesday. The provisional tapu was imposed over much of the Bay of Islands.
Mr T. T. P. B. Puriri, chairman of the Waitangi Maori Committee, said the family of the dead boy did not wish to inconvenience people who had travelled a long way to enjoy the fishing in the Bay of Islands.
Members of the family ' today asked that the restriction be over as small an area as possible. The tapu will be lifted at! first light on Monday, ] i
