Young Quinn picked for Cup

("The Press" Special Service)

WELLINGTON.

Young Quinn’s win in track record time for 2000 metres at Hutt Park on Saturday night might well ensure him of favouritism for the Wellington Cup tomorrow night.

He ran the journey in 2min 32.75ec, just outside Hi Fovle’s New Zealand standing start record of 2min 32.45ec. Young Quinn has held his condition well in spite o fa hard programme. He has been beaten only three times this season in something like 16 starts, and as the Inter-Dominion draws closer, Young Quinn’s prospects continue to soar.

Speedy Guest has placed Jack Smolensk! in something of a quandary.

1 With David Garrison and Gay Rose, he gives his trainer a third of the cup field. Smolensk! will have to find another driver. Derek Jones has an engagement for Van Glory because Denis Nyhan, naturally enough, will be behind Robalan.

Smolensk! said on Saturday night that he would drive David Garrison and Jack Carmichael Gay Rose. Smolensk! was to have consulted Mr Woolley yesterday and he will decide on a driver for Speedy Guest today. Van Glory and Koarakau, both of whom settled in midfield, ran on for third and fourth respectively on Saturday night. It was a good trial for tomorrow’s cup and both were forced over extra ground when making the home turn.

David Garrison, out in the open for much of the race, faded slightly over the closing stages for sixth in front of Hi Fovle. The second favourite was only battling over the closing stages.
