Fine win to Swede

(N.Z. Press Association)

TIMARU.

A masterly performance from the 19-year-old Swedish player, Olle Palmer, won the men’s singles title at the South Canterbury Marlboro tennis tournament on Saturday.

Palmer beat David Hawkes (Wellington) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Palmer had every aspect of his game working—the big serve, volleys and ground shots—and Hawkes was not able to produce the form which put him through to the final.

The women’s final went to the young Australian, Kim Ruddell, who beat Shirley Haig of Canterbury’ in a topsy-turvey match, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
