Wellington needs to beat Central Districts, and also score eight performance points, if it is to retain the Plunket Shield. Otago leads the table with 63 points, with only the Wellington - Central match to be played. Canterbury has 56, Wellington • 46, Auckland 45, Central 33 and Northern 23. Wellington will meet Central at the Basin Reserve on January 18, when the New Zealand team is in Australia. Wellington will lose John Morrison and Ewen Chatfield; Central will be without Graham Edwards and Lance Cairns.
