Treasure-seekers on their way
Commander J. Grattan, the Royal Navy diving expert, who will lead an expedition to the Auckland Islands in search of the wreck of the General Grant, arrived in Christchurch from London yesterday with two other British divers, Messrs J. K. and T. J. McCormack.
The Christchurch businessman who is financing the expedition, Mr G. P. O’Farrell, met the divers at Christchurch Airport, and a quarter of an hour later the four were on their way to Dunedin.
The party is shown above at Christchurch Airport before their departure. From left are Messrs

A twin-engined Piper Apache was chartered to fly the expedition members south to join the expedition ship Acheron, which sailed last night from Port Chalmers.
The divers said that they were hopeful of finding the gold which was aboard the General Grant when she sank off the coast of the Auckland Islands in 1866. “If it can be done, we’ll do it,” said Mr T. J. McCormack.
Mr McCormack said they would need a lot of luck with the weather.
