LISBON, January 12. The Portuguese Armed Forces, organising a vigorous cultural enlightenment campaign, have admitted that they have run into opposition.
Trouble arose during a commando exercise in northern Portugal. Question time on an “enlightenment session” in Braganca had been used to try “to break the unity between the people and the Armed Forces,” said a communique And audience interruption had prevented the staging of a play. Local sources said the military had been asked whether there were political prisoners in the country and whether the commando exercise was not just a waste of money.
