Lakes fairly full

(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 12.

Holidays and a prolonged spell of dry, hot weather have eased the load on hydroelectric power stations, and in spite of slow inflows most lakes are at satisfactory levels, according to a New Zealand Electricity Department spokesman. Lake Taupo is 92 per cent full, and the main South Island lakes are reported fairly full, Lake Pukaki being only Ift short of the present maximum level permissible while work proceeds on the Pukaki high dam. Lake Tekapo is 90 per cent full and Lake Coleridge 95 per cent full. Lake Hawea is 64 per cent full but not much water is being drawn off for power generation.

I While there was a low i demand for power to offset any deterioration in the water-storage situation, the position was considered satisfactory, the spokesman said. However, with a return to work this week in many power-orientated industries, the situation could change unless there was a break in the weather, he said.
