SHIPPING NEWS Big bulk carrier due at Lyttelton

Due at Lyttelton from Nauru tomorrow with about 30,000 tons of bulk phosphate is the bulk carrier Kolle D, which according to the Harbourmaster (Captain D. Holden), who will probably pilot her to her Gladstone Pier berth, will be the largest and longest (603 ft bulk carrier to enter the port.

The Kolle D is of 19,564 tons gross, and has a deadweight capacity of 31,953 tons.

Captain Holden said that the vessel's draught should be about 35ft 6in, but this could be determined exactly only on her arrival.

It is a great tribute to the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s painstaking and dedicated engineering staff that the harbour offers such increased deep-water facilities. It is also a tribute to the dredge crews who work a monotonous daily routine, year in and year out. Skilled handling of these big vessels by Lyttelton’s pilots, in confined waters, is another feature which could easily be taken for granted. All these factors combined are a good augury for the day when Lyttelton welcomes the container giants. In Captain Holden’s personal experience, the deepest-draught vessel he has piloted at Lyttelton has been a tanker drawing 36 feet. But at Europort (Rotterdam) —the world’s largest port— Captain Holden on an overseasvisit 15 months ago saw a vessel] of 65ft draught being handled. Of this record Lyttelton phosphate load, about 8000 tons will be discharged here and the balance at the shallower ports of Timaru (15,000 tons) and iNapier (7000 tons). Time and again, Lyttelton observers see big bulk carriers beI ing gently and silently berthed ! at Lyttelton under skilled pllotI age, supported by competent tugmasters, to lighten up before being able to proceed to shalI lower ports. But the Kolle D is expected to be the daddy of ; them all.

Of handsome vessels, a regular caller at Lyttelton and a rnem--ber of a dying type in a world of increasingly harsh and ugly nautical architecture is the twinscrew refrigerated cargo liner Adelaide Star, which berthed yesterday at Cashin Quay. She has brought about 4000 tons of British general cargo for discharge. Commanded by Captain A. W. Kinghorn, the Adelaide Star, which will load back for Britain at Timaru and Bluff, still has one of those rare and treasured facilities —accommodation for 12 passengers.
