Obituary Major R. E. Chambler
Major Ronald E. Chambler, who has died at his home at Governor's Bay, was works manager for Austral Standard Cables, Ltd, Sockburn.
Born in the north of England, Major Chambler came to New Zealand after serving with the Royal Air Force as a navigator and joined the New Zealand Army signals corps. He served in the Second World War, and in Korea; and during the Malaysian emergency —for two years he was with a United Nations force in Palestine and the Middle East.
He was chief instructor at the Army school of signals at Waiouru when he resigned five years ago to join Austral Standard Cables as personnel manager. He became works manager two years ago. Major Chambler was chairman of the Mount Herbert Civic Trust, having been re-elected five days before his death. He was deeply interested in preserving the environment, and was a leader in the protest over Mr G. P. O’Farrel’s land development schemes.
