Rome view of remarriage

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copvritfht) ROME.

The Vatican weekly newspaper, "Osservatore della Domenica,” has reaffirmed that Roman Catholics who obtain divorces and remarry are public sinners in the eyes of the Church, and are excluded from taking Communion.

Replying to a reader's letter, the newspaper says that the Church considers the marriage tie indissoluble. “Those who, going against this doctrine, have requester! a validly-contracted marriage to be dissolved, and have remarried under civil law, are to be considered in a state of grave public sin, even if the facts are unknown in the circle in which they live," the newspaper says. “Therefore, according to the discipline of the Roman Catholic Church, they cannot be admitted to the Sacraments, and are thus not able to live in the full ecclesiastical Communion."

The “Osservatore" adds: “This does not mean, however, that the Church should not concern itself in a maternal way with those of its sons who place themselves in a state of sin.”
