Demolition
Sir, — The other morning “The Press” reported that the Civic Trust was having a “last ditch” battle with the Ministry of Works to save the Normal School. Why this obsession with the demolition of the last few remaining old buildings in Christchurch as well as elsewhere in the country? The Nelson Provincial Buildings were demolished some years ago, because the last occupants — the Ministry of Works — had so neglected and abused the buildings, that repairs were almost impossible. The Christchurch Central Police Station was demolished — which was nothing short of a crime — to make room for some minor part of the new Police headquarters. With intelligent planning this could have been avoided. Now the Normal School and next, we understand, the Chief Post Office. Not safe, we are told each time. They have stood the test of time. Spend a little of our money on maintenance, rather than wrecking. — Yours, etc., ARCHITECT. December 6, 1974.
