Christchurch West rally

Christchurch West remained co-leader, with Monowai, of the senior women’s softball competition after a great comeback in the fifth innings against Burnside on Saturday.

In the other games United overwhelmed Aorangi and Monowai had an easy win over Western Suburbs. Results were: Christchurch West 10, Burnside 4. Monowai 8, Western Suburbs 0. United 16, Aorangi 3.

Christchurch West v Bumside Burnside was the first to score when it forced an error in the bottom of the first innings and made two runs after hits from R. Happi and R. Storer. Christchurch West came back with two runs in the top of the second to M. Rhodes and C. Quested but Bumside went in front again in the third innings when Storer was hit home by K. Norcliffe. In its fourth innings Bumside went further ahead when J. Kilburn scored on an error.

West rallied in the top of the fifth innings and smashed hits all over the field to score eight runs and make the final score, 10-4. Storer (Christchurch West) and M. Rhodes (Bumside) both made two hits, while Rhodes pitched three strike-outs and conceded seven hits as against Storer’s two strike-outs and seven hits. Monowai v Western Suburbs Western Suburbs had no answer to the pitching of B. Makinson who struck-out

eight batters and gave away only two hits — to W. Stewart and L. Currie. Monowai scored two runs in its first innings, three runs in the third, and three in the fourth. Its best batter was M. Ashwell who made two safe hits, including a home run which brought two runners home in the fourth innings. United v Aorangi

Aorangi scored first in the bottom of the first innings when D. Haeroroa scored on a fielder’s choice after making a three-base hit, but failed to add to its account in its next three innings.

United went on a runscoring spree in its second innings with eight runs, scored a further six in its third innings and added two in its fourth. Aorangi’s only other runs came in the bottom of the fifth innings when it recovered from two down to score two runs through good batting by C. Lee and Q. Donnelly. The best batter on either side was L. Hamilton (United) who made two multiple-base hits.
